Sure, if you’re pursuing a new role, you are going to want to work on your resume, optimize your LinkedIn profile and let your network know you are looking. But when it comes to the interview, the best question to ask a potential employer is, “Does your CEO work with a coach?”

After more than a decade of coaching hundreds of CEOs and business owners who are leading companies from less than a million to more than a billion in revenue — from three employees to thousands — I have learned something about CEOs who hire executive coaches and why they may lead the best companies.

1. They’re here to learn, just like you are.

The best CEOs know they don’t know everything. They value the expertise of others and are confident enough to surround themselves with people who are smarter than they are and from whom they can learn and get better. They believe in professional development for themselves and likely will support it for you as well.

2. They worry about their employees. Really.

In nearly every coaching session I have, my client expresses concern for an employee who may be going through a rough time. It may be work-related, but more often than not, it is personal. The CEO is worried about an employee with a health issue or who’s going through a divorce or experiencing financial difficulty.

It may surprise you to know that many of the employers I work with have off the record privately loaned or gifted money to employees for anything from tuition to rent to rehab to family funeral expenses.
