You’ve been job searching for months and can’t land a new role. You’ve sent out hundreds of resumes, gone to dozens of interviews, and still you’re jobless.

With unemployment at an all-time low, it seems puzzling. Sure, the job market is competitive. There is a lot of amazing talent out there. And yes, you are amazing, too. But it’s time to reflect and recognize that it’s not just the “competitive job market.” It’s also you.

Yes, you. You’re not perfect, I’m not perfect, none of us are perfect. So let’s get down to business.

Before applying for your next job, ask yourself the following questions:

1. Am I relying too much on one job search method?

Whether it’s job searching sites, employment agencies or networking, if you are only using one job search method, you are missing out on a vast, vast majority of potential jobs. Don’t just idly wait for the companies you know are hiring. Reach out to that company you love, even if they aren’t hiring! You have nothing to lose, and you might just put yourself on the company’s radar if they are impressed with your qualifications.

Because the job market is so hot, many companies hire new employees before ever needing to post a single listing online. Upwards of 85% of jobs are achieved by way of networking.

But before you reach out, make sure to ask for referrals. And if you’re not networking, start. Now.
