Top business and career coaches from Forbes Coaches Council offer firsthand insights on leadership development & careers.

In today’s job-hopping environment, it’s becoming less common for employees to stick with the same company for more than a few years. While it’s great to have loyal workers who have put in five, 10 or 20 years with your organization, you also need to pay special attention to these employees. It’s easy to get bored and lose motivation after being in a role for so long, and if that happens, their productivity and engagement will naturally decline.

As a manager, you can help your veteran team members reignite their passion for their jobs. Try one of these 10 tactics suggested by members of Forbes Coaches Council.

1. Challenge Them To Think Differently And Try New Things

People get bored of doing the same things over and over again. Reignite their passion and creativity by giving them work that puts them back on the learning curve. Give them something that challenges them to think differently, try out new behaviors, work with different people. It could include delegating things you do to them. It then becomes a win for you and for that person. – Edith Onderick-Harvey, NextBridge Consulting, LLC

2. Establish An Emotional Reconnection

Our longing for connection is the most powerful motivational force in our brain. When people lose their motivation, it is because they are disconnected from their peers, manager and team. The best way to reignite their passion is to reconnect them emotionally — creating safety to explore emotions, identifying what do they need and having bonding conversations whey they can reconnect. – Lola Gershfeld, PsyD, Level Five Executive, Inc.

3. Encourage Them To Look For Passion Outside Their Job

When burnout or dissatisfaction approaches, it’s not as simple as looking for a promotion or taking a vacation. The candle needs to be relit, and the easiest way to do this is to learn something new. It’s most effective to look outside for reignition. Encourage employees to take a class or start a hobby they’ve always wanted to try, and passion will follow them back to the job. – Laura DeCarlo, Career Directors International

4. Know And Use Your Employee’s Personal Goals To Motivate

Discover your employee’s core driver and personal goals. If you don’t know what drives your employee, you won’t be able to keep them motivated to keep growing at work. Create a new task or project for them and illustrate a direct link between how their successful performance will help them achieve the life outside of work that they desire. – Linda Zander, Super Sized Success

5. Implement A Reverse Mentoring Program

Mentoring matters. Many times businesses have a more experienced employee mentor a new employee. Reverse mentoring is when a company pairs an enthusiastic employee who has learned a new skill with an employee who is stuck in their position. Team encouragement leads to new perspectives, which will reignite passion. – Ken Gosnell, CEO Experience

6. Ask Them How To Improve Their Role

Ask employees to solicit opinions on what they do and one key way it could be improved. Have them talk with others in their profession or industry and learn more about new ideas in their space. Create a learning agenda — what could they learn this year in this role? Finally, identify an experiment. What one new thing could they try in their role that would benefit them and others? – Joe Casey, Princeton Executive Coaching
