Humans and machines will not battle for the title of smartest guy in the room. It is a no contest-game as AI continues to evolve and our data sources get more robust. So where does that leave us humans in the face of AI? Edward D. Hess, professor of business administration and Batten Executive-in-Residence at the University of Virginia Darden School of Business, raises an interesting point in his book Humility Is the New Smart: “In the AI age, ‘being smart’ will mean something completely different.”
Being the smartest person in the room often leaves us with incorrect assumptions, facts and ideas based more on ego and less on reality and human needs. Of course, we could all hire a fact checker to correct our misquoted data and faulty assumptions at the end of our meetings, similar to what my favorite podcaster, Dax Shepard, does in Armchair Expert. At the end of each podcast, his producer comes on the show and corrects all the incorrect statements that were made in his two-hour discussions with those he interviews. Innovation idea: real-time correction/fact-checking tools coming soon!
In an article Hess wrote for the Harvard Business Review last June, he elaborated on the title of his book means: “The new smart will be about trying to overcome the two big inhibitors of critical thinking and team collaboration: our ego and our fears. Doing so will make it easier to perceive reality as it is, rather than as we wish it to be. In short, we will embrace humility. That is how we humans will add value in a world of smart technology.”
So how might we tackle innovation in the age of humility? Here are four tips:
1. Create An AI Manifesto For Your Organization
Prepare your business. How will your teams interact with new technology and the progressive nature of AI? Technology and AI empower individuals and teams. There will be a need to interpret AI for business decisions that impact your customers.
2. Focus Your Teams On Expanding Your Customers And Markets With New Innovations
The plethora of data that will be available could help provide incredible insights to help your teams make the best decisions possible for your company. The good news is, the time from idea to market may easily compress, the risks of launching new ideas and innovations may be lower and the speed at which you fail or succeed will improve. Prepare your teams now by putting processes in place to manage data, information and interpretations. Also, prepare them for the speed at which things will move.
