The IT world has changed significantly over the years, especially when it comes to hiring the right tech team member. While a few years ago, it was important to find a job candidate that first of all had the technical skillset needed to complete the job, many technology managers are finding that today’s job seekers also must be able to employ soft skills.

These soft skills can help your tech team interface with your company, as well as its customers. Skills such as communication, leadership and adaptability can become strong benefits for your team and your organization’s growth and development.

So what are some of the specific traits should you look for when hiring? Below, seven members of Forbes Technology Council share some of the most important aspects applicants need to possess to qualify for a position on their tech team. Here is what they had to say:

1. Ability To Think Independently

The ability to think creatively and independently is a crucial trait. A tech team succeeds when a bunch of creative thinkers come together to solve a common problem. If there is diversity of thought, and a framework where ideas are challenged and fine tuned, it leads to the creation of great products. – Venkat Malladi, Vymo

2. Curiosity

Candidates who ask questions about how they can contribute and whose passions line up with what we need will get offers. We want to hear and see signs that candidates are curious and focused on the world outside themselves — signs that people are doers and learners who will embrace new ideas and challenges in pursuit of making everyone around them more successful. – Harold Engstrom, FlowWright
