Successful CIOs, CTOs & executives from Forbes Technology Council offer firsthand insights on tech & business.
As the year progresses, so do the technologies that companies use to reach their customers and grow their revenue. Having a solid tech team that can carry out the desires of the business, as well as the demand of your customers, can ensure your organization is solidly competitive.
Ensuring you have a tech team that has the right technology skills and experience to employ these solutions means you need to hire the right people for the job. Adding to your IT department requires a keen eye, as there can be a host of applicants vying for a spot on your team, each with their own strengths.
So who do you hire? Below, seven members of Forbes Technology Council weigh in on the characteristics to look for when making key hires for your tech team to help you decide who gets an offer. Here is what they suggest looking for:
1. Demonstrated Motivation
When evaluating engineering talent, I always look for a demonstrated motivation for understanding existing solutions. Candidates who exhibit this trait typically are strong problem solvers and become invested in the success of the product. Often, they will go out of their way to refactor code to make their job easier and the product more maintainable for their co-workers. – James Kupernik, VidMob
2. Hunger
When given a choice between someone who’s going to be “comfortable” in the job and someone for whom the job is going to be exciting and challenging, we choose the candidate who wants the challenge. We don’t know exactly what we’ll need a year from now, but we know for sure that there’ll always be opportunities for people who like to learn. – Philip Soffer, test IO
